Mental Health and Well-being in SD73
Little buckets of mental health and wellness are finding their way to locations across the district in support of Canada Mental Health Week. The tools in these Not Myself Today mental health awareness toolkits include posters, brochures, and coaching and advice line tips.
“In today’s economy, most employees are valued for their minds,” said a Not Myself Today website sponsored by the Canadian Mental Health Association. “Promoting and protecting the mental health of employees is critically important.”
Not Myself Today is a workplace health initiative focused on encouraging conversations about mental health.
“The tools in these toolkits should be kept in a communal area in our district workplaces so employees can use them regularly as they want,” said Darlene Doricic, SD73 Disability, and Attendance Manager. “There is no instruction or knowledge required to use these tools, as they are designed to generate self-starting conversation and provide tips on how to support each other at work.”
Some facts from the British Columbia Division of the CMHA tell us about 17 per cent of British Columbians – somewhere around 800,000 people – are experiencing a mental illness or substance use issue today. Also, it is estimated about 84,000 children and youth in BC have a diagnosed mental disorder, yet less than one-third of those children who seek help are receiving mental health services. In 2010, the government of British Columbia estimated that mental health problems cost our economy an estimated $6.6 billion annually.
